NJ ASSP Scholarship Program
Scholarship Sponsored by American Society of Safety Professionals
Intro
If you have a son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild attending college — or know a New Jersey student pursuing Environmental Health & Safety studies — two scholarship opportunities are available through the NJ ASSP Chapter. Both awards are $1,000 and are granted twice annually. Below are the program overviews, eligibility rules, application materials, deadlines, and judging factors for each scholarship. General requirements applicable to both scholarships
- Complete the scholarship application form and submit it within the open application window.
- Include an official/current transcript.
- Provide a reference letter from a teacher, university professor/department head, or current supervisor.
- Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Selection also considers leadership in extracurricular activities, participation in professional organizations, written communication demonstrated in the application, and awards/honors received.
- Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered; applicants must reapply in the next application period.
Ted Brickley & Bernice Shikora Scholarship
Overview
This scholarship supports students studying Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related EHS disciplines. One $1,000 award is given each application period.
Eligibility
- Enrolled at an accredited university in an EHS-related major (Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or similar).
- May be a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student.
- Must have completed at least 12 credit hours in environmental- or safety-related coursework.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 specifically in environmental- or safety-related courses (4.0 scale).
- Applicant must either reside in New Jersey or be attending a college located in New Jersey.
Application schedule and submission requirements
- Application periods:
- Period 1: September 1 through mid-November. Awards announced at the December chapter meeting.
- Period 2: January 1 through mid-April. Awards announced at the May chapter meeting.
- A complete submission during the application window must include:
- Completed application form.
- Copy of current transcript.
- Short biography or current resume listing interests, hobbies, and/or work experience.
- Reference letter to the Chapter from the relative who is an active NJ ASSP member.
- Reference letter from a high school teacher, university department head, or professor.
Judging criteria
The Scholarship Committee evaluates candidates using these factors:
- GPA as shown on the transcript.
- Leadership demonstrated through extracurricular activities.
- Level of involvement in safety, hygiene, or related activities.
- Participation in professional environmental or safety-related organizations.
- Written communication quality in the submitted materials.
- Academic awards and honors.
- Any prior awards received from the NJ Chapter.
Joyce Cunningham Scholarship
Overview
This scholarship is intended for students who are family members of active NJ ASSP Chapter members (son/daughter, niece/nephew, or grandchild). One $1,000 award is given each application period.
Eligibility
- Enrolled (or accepted) in any field of study at an accredited university.
- Eligible applicants include high school seniors accepted to an accredited university, and full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students.
- Applicant must be the son/daughter, niece/nephew, or grandchild of an active, in-good-standing NJ ASSP Chapter member.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Application schedule and submission requirements
- Application periods:
- Period 1: September 1 through November 15. Award presented at the December chapter meeting.
- Period 2: January 1 through April 15. Award presented at the May chapter meeting.
- A complete submission during the application window must include:
- Completed application form.
- Copy of current transcript.
- Short biography or current resume listing interests, hobbies, and/or work experience.
- Reference letter to the Chapter from the relative who is an active NJ ASSP member.
- Reference letter from a high school teacher, university department head, or professor.
- For high school seniors: an acceptance letter from the accredited university.
Judging criteria
The Selection Committee will consider:
- GPA as shown on the transcript.
- Leadership demonstrated through extracurricular activities.
- Engagement in professional organizations or charitable activities.
- Written communication demonstrated by the application materials.
- Academic awards and honors.
- Level of involvement in the NJ Chapter by the sponsoring ASSP member.
- Any previous awards received from the NJ Chapter.
