Introduction
ISTA and the ISTA Foundation celebrate and support their members and the next generation of educators. Through scholarships and awards, they aim to acknowledge outstanding work and provide funding that helps sustain strong public education across Indiana. Each award has specific nomination and application requirements detailed below.
Eligibility
- Open to undergraduate or graduate students who are BIPOC and members of ISTA’s Aspiring Educator program.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time practicum as part of an Indiana Approved Educator Preparation Program and be working toward a teaching license.
- Candidates should intend to seek employment in a public school in Indiana.
Ann Wilkins Legacy Scholarship
Named in honor of Ann Wilkins — a former Indianapolis Public Schools teacher, past president of the Indianapolis Education Association, and former ISTA UniServ Director — this scholarship is intended to strengthen the pipeline of well-qualified Black, Indigenous, and other educators of color in Indiana.
Award details and requirements
- Amount: $1,000 per semester, renewable for a second semester (maximum two semesters).
- Eligible recipients: BIPOC undergraduate or graduate students in a full-time practicum pursuing licensure in any Indiana Approved Educator Preparation Program and who are current ISTA Aspiring Educator members.
- Application materials: one letter of reference and an essay of 500 words or fewer describing why a racially diverse faculty is important to the academic outcomes of Hoosier students.
- Selection: applications are reviewed and the recipient is chosen by the Racial Affairs Committee.
Deadlines
- For fall semester consideration: nominations/applications are due in November.
- For spring semester consideration: nominations/applications are due in April.
