Barowsky Scholars
Scholarship Sponsored by Finance Authority of Maine
Introduction
The Barowsky Scholars program supports Maine students committed to strengthening skills in attentive listening, civil discourse, facilitation, and negotiation so they can lead by building trust and finding common ground among people with different perspectives and backgrounds. The award is funded by the Andrew P. Barowsky Foundation and is administered by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI).
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen and a current resident of Maine.
- Be a high school senior or a recent high school graduate.
- Plan to enroll full-time in 2025–2026 as a first-year student in a four-year degree program at an accredited, not-for-profit public or private college or university in the United States.
- Have a strong high school academic record.
- Show motivation to succeed in college and a commitment to positively impacting their community and society.
- Complete, before finishing college, at least one course in economics and two additional courses chosen from: accounting, finance, history, or psychology.
- Demonstrate a commitment to reasoned, rational thinking, an ability to work collaboratively across differences, and an intention to apply those abilities toward civic engagement.
- Participate in a balanced mix of community, school, and work activities.
- Live on campus in housing for which payment is made directly to the university (for example, university-sponsored housing or student-group organized housing) and attend classes in person; on-campus residence and in-person attendance are required to receive and renew the scholarship.
Award
The program provides a need-based scholarship of up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years.
