Overview Our merit-based scholarships, offered twice each year, aim to encourage and support women pursuing studies related to international trade—this includes fields such as trade policy and negotiations, global business and supply chains, economic development, and related areas. Who is eligible - Must self-identify as female. - Must be currently enrolled (full- or part-time) at an accredited U.S. college or university. - Acceptable academic status: undergraduate students in their junior or senior year, or graduate students. Award details and selection - Each scholarship is $3,000. Funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s academic institution. - Winners are chosen by judging the quality of the submitted essay according to WIIT Trust criteria. Decisions are made without regard to race, religion, age, national origin, or sexual orientation. Required information from winners for payment Winners must supply the following so WIIT can remit scholarship funds to the recipient’s school: - Name of the academic institution. - Point of contact at the school for scholarship payments, including phone number and email. - Institution payment/address information (and phone/email where required). - Student ID number to identify the payment. - Any additional information your school requires for processing scholarship payments. Additional benefits for winners In addition to the $3,000 award to be applied toward educational expenses, scholarship recipients will receive: - One year of personal mentorship from a WIIT member. - One year of WIIT membership. - The opportunity to contribute to a WIIT program tied to the winning essay’s subject, including collaboration with experienced WIIT professionals on event planning and a possible speaking opportunity. Application requirements - The entry must be an essay on a topic directly related to international trade. Submissions may be an original piece written for this scholarship or a properly formatted academic paper from current coursework on a relevant subject. - Every application must include: - The essay (see specifications below). - A completed information sheet (application form). - A university transcript confirming current enrollment. What strong submissions include - A topic clearly linked to international trade (see suggested categories below). - A clear thesis statement that sets out the essay’s central trade argument. - Critical analysis that considers both sides of the issue and defends the essay’s main claim. - Correct grammar, consistent formatting, and endnotes or a bibliography. Essay formatting and submission rules - Length: minimum 5 and maximum 10 numbered pages (endnotes/bibliography do not count toward page total). - Formatting: typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman. - File type: submit as a Word document. - Anonymity: remove all personal identifiers (your name, university name, etc.) from the essay file. - Email submissions to: info@wiittrust.org Prohibition on AI assistance Use of AI tools to create or assist in generating essay content is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, tools such as Copilot, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and similar systems. Suggested essay topic areas Applicants choose their topic, which may be broad or narrowly focused, provided it has a clear connection to international trade. Examples of suitable categories: - Trade and Development: How can trade policy advance sustainable development goals or environmental objectives? - Trade and Empowerment: How might trade policy promote gender diversity and deliver concrete gains for women’s economic empowerment? - Trade and Investment Agreements: Analyze a current agreement’s effects on a particular industry and/or on labor and workforce outcomes. - U.S. Trade Policy: Assess a contemporary aspect of U.S. trade policy and its potential positive or negative impacts on the U.S. economy. - Another country’s trade/commercial/economic policy: Evaluate how that policy affects U.S. competitiveness (positively and/or negatively).
