Introduction
The Garden Club Federation of Maine (GCFM), together with its districts and local clubs, awards an annual $3,000 scholarship to encourage horticulture-focused education and to support the next generation of stewards for Earth’s natural resources.
Eligibility
- Must be a legal resident of the state of Maine.
- Open to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students; college sophomores may apply if they will be entering their junior year the following fall.
- Applicants may not be related to any GCFM board member.
- The recipient’s college or university does not have to be located in Maine.
Fields of Study (eligible majors)
Applicants should be majoring in one of the following or a closely related gardening/science discipline: Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Conservation, Forestry, Botany, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Environmental Concerns, Ecology, Land Management, or similar fields.
Award Details
- The scholarship amount is $3,000.
- Scholarship funds are sent directly to the recipient’s college or university in August.
- Each June, the scholarship winner is invited to attend the GCFM Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon at the State Convention.
How to Apply

Note: The GCFM application form is NOT a fillable PDF. Please print the form, complete it by hand or type responses on a printed copy, then scan the completed form for electronic submission.
Required Application Materials
Your submission must include:
- Official transcript
- Financial aid information, signed by your Financial Aid Officer
- Personal letter from the applicant (one page maximum)
- A list of extra-curricular activities and awards
- Three letters of recommendation
Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on:
1. Demonstrated aptitude in horticulture
2. Academic record
3. Avocational interests and vocational potential in the field
4. Character
5. Financial need
